Description

Try not to get too intoxicated off your liter steins of German beer, or you might not be able to enjoy your meaty bratwurst. In case it wasn't obvious, this place has a bit of a Bavarian vibe. Brick arches, faux trees covered in fake ivy and oompah music make for an experience worthy of a theme park. The one thing that is real, however, is the raucous atmosphere, encouraged by the 14 quality German beers on tap and the long communal tables that invite socializing. Tables can be hard to come by, so arrive early. The menu consists of hearty German fare like beef goulash, homemade spatzle with cheese and bacon, sausage platters, smoked pork belly and more. Sadly, you can't make reservations unless you have a party of ten or more, and not even then on Friday and Saturday night. Luckily you can pass the time like everyone else does; drinking copious amounts of beer while jammed shoulder-to-shoulder between tables.—Keith Wagstaff

  • 2004 | Best fake indoor trees

Sure, you can serve Wiener schnitzel and Hefeweizen and call yourself a beer garden, but ZUM SCHNEIDER took things further, crafting elaborate trees out of plaster. Patrons snack on pretzels and down liters of beer in this mini-forest, where sprawling branches are draped in red-rose-and-leaf garlands. More »

  • 2002 | Best Biergarten For Watching The Xxx U.S. Lose All Major Sporting Events

If there's one thing we learned during the 2002 World Cup, it's the difference between an ale and a lager. Then again, were Manhattan a bustling metropolis of, say, Germany, actually winning at soccer would be a rite of passage, and we'd have less of an excuse to drink excessively for every goal (or lack thereof). Either way, ZUM SCHNEIDER fills to the brim with happily drunken pedestrian sports fans--day or night--for most major tournaments, cups, matches, and meets, and happily... More »

  • 2001 | Brawniest Beer

ZUM SCHNEIDER is getting mobbed of late, but the open-air Bavarian forest is still worth the trip to Avenue C for its $5 steins of funky, hard-to-pronounce brews. Way bigger than a pint and with an alcohol content that'll knock you for a loop, they're one of the best deals in the hood. Other highlights: gratis chunky pretzels, long communal tables that'll seat your whole posse, and the on-the-house "schnitts" (or half-beers) for the road, which left this critic utterly schnitt-faced.
