This Southwestern grill originated in Austin, Texas, and first expanded in 1991 with a second location in Scottsdale. Since then, it’s spread throughout the Valley to Phoenix, Tempe, and Chandler, serving it’s version of Tex-Mex with a few outside influences. Starters include catfish beignets with cornmeal-crusted catfish and jalapeno tartar sauce as well as raw ahi chipotle citrus bites, a ceviche with mango, jicama, and avocado wasabi aioli above crispy tostada rounds. But what Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill does best is grill. From seasoned chicken topped with nopalitos salad to green chile barbacoa, the meat entrées are outstanding. Other mouthwatering options include five-cheese macaroni with achiote chicken and toasted bacon gratin, grilled ruby trout salad with spicy walnuts and goat cheese, and smoked chicken chile relleno with pecans, apricots, raisins, and Jack cheese. The best time to hit up this chain is during happy hour, when a small plate of seared sesame ahi tuna, normally over $20, can be had for a mere $6.

We used to sneer at those amateurs who insisted on making this tequila-and-lime confection take a pass through the blender. The best margaritas, we'd insist, are always on the rocks. Okay, so they're talking about the Sixth Street in Austin, not Tempe, but we don't care. Z'Tejas started in Texas, but is now headquartered in Scottsdale, and in any case, there's no... More »
Yes, it's a chain restaurant. But the margaritas are so tasty, we're betting even the folks at Arizona Chain Reaction have a hard time resisting happy hour here. Generously poured, perfectly blended, and with just the right tequila kick, these margaritas would convince even the most ardent food snob to give the blender a chance. Feeling adventurous? Try a flight, with a trio of excellent mini margaritas flavored with your pick of prickly pear, guava, or even Chambord. More »
Some folks like their margaritas on the rocks, just as some folks enjoy a 10-inch spike to the upper thorax. Those rocks-in-their-heads margarita masochists will argue that frozen margaritas are an abomination thought up by girly men. Back in the day, they'll point out, we didn't have blenders, so margaritas would have been served chilled or on the rocks at best. Perhaps, but then there's this little thing known as "progress," of which we're so fond. Since the invention of the margarita back... More »
