In the opening segments of the original Iron Chef television show, some guy, presumably a chef, bites into a red bell pepper with orgasmic zeal. Expect nothing less (and potentially even more) from bacon fanatics as they descend on Zinnia’s at... More »
What? Not done with your holiday shopping? Yeah, neither are we. But we've been making lists -- and checking them twice -- and we've got some suggestions for the nice people on your list. Today, Chow ... More »
We've spent the last year in the laboratory putting Phoenix under the microscope to reveal hundreds of specimens of the best culture, outdoor adventures, shopping, dining, and nightlife the city has t... More »
Whether it feels like it or not, summer is coming to an end -- well, the vacation part of it anyway. And if you've already signed up for your classes then Phase 1 of your back-to-school agenda is comp... More »
This was one of the first vintage/consignment shops I went to after moving to Phoenix, and it's still one of my favorites. It's HUGE, and always filled with fun treasures. There's tons of glassware and kitchen stuff, and I always spot a vintage camera or two (my favorite!). Even if you don't leave with anything, it's worth browsing on a Saturday afternoon.
We didn't used to own a set of Santa Claus salt-and-pepper shakers or a Frosty the Snowman slushy maker, but we do now, thanks to Zinnias at Melrose, our favorite spot in town for vintage holiday gewgaws and all things Christmas. There, we've seen boxes of 60-year-old Shiny Brite glass tree ornaments stacked alongside mint-in-package tinsel, bags of still-glossy garland strings, and even an ancient card full of brightly painted jingle bells. We bought as much as we could and dragged it all... More »
We love you, Phoenix shoppers, and we're giving up our most closely held secret to prove it. In fact, it's not just our secret. Up 'til now, no one has known about The Book at Zinnias at Melrose. But now you do, because we're blabbing. You can thank us later. Here's how it works: At Zinnias -- the city's latest and greatest Seventh Avenue antiques and collectibles mall -- there's this book that's kept behind the counter. If you're looking for something, say a specific vintage coffee... More »
Is it the fact that we never leave this great treasure trove empty-handed? Is it that the friendly staff routinely tips us off to sales at other, nearby antique stores? Is it the fact that this place shares a parking lot with Flo's, one of the best thrift stores in town? When you're talking Zinnias on Melrose, the answer is "yes" to all. This 15,000-square-foot vintage-and-collectibles mall features 36 different vendors, where bargain hunters have scored everything from a 1950s chrome dining... More »
Here's a little shopping secret: Go upstairs at Michael Todd's new vintage mall, to the wide terrace that overlooks the many bibelot-crammed carrels down below. Up there, you'll find practically a whole floor of old, newer, wrought-iron, and pot-metal outdoor furniture. A separate department, this space is filled with trellis benches and wire terrace tables and old tin shell chairs, all grouped in displays to inspire a garden party of your own. This swell trove of beautiful old lawn... More »
Before her untimely passing early this summer, fashionista and paper curator Heidi Owens upgraded her already fabulous vintage clothing shop, turning it into a frankly jaw-dropping fashion emporium of the past. By moving into the large, linoleum-tiled boutique on West Indian School Road, Owens quadrupled her floor space and was able to fulfill her dream: creating a department store, circa 1964, that featured the best examples of fabulous fashion from the last half-century -- and every...
