Description

The Zig Zag, on the Western steps, has the look of a sexy lounge and the vibe of a seedier joint in a much seedier town. The lounge seating is stylized, with semicircular, emerald mohair and mahogany booths. Zig Zag's food is better than functional, but it purposefully takes a back seat to the drinks. Locals who work downtown come here to treat themselves to some of the best cocktails in town. The Zig Zag's proprietors pride themselves on providing the best classic and original cocktails possible, and the effort shows. And what's especially nice about the Zig Zag is that they do not charge an arm and a leg for the artfully-mixed cocktails they serve, unlike most of the other similarly-executed watering holes in the neighborhood. During happy hour, which lasts from 5 - 7 p.m., it's just $6 for a house cocktail.

Head cocktailologist Murray Stenson pours some drinks (i... More »

Have to have a negroni made by Murray. They always have terrific classic cocktails made with a “good cooks passion” and finesse.

Simply put, the Zig Zag Cafe is the greatest classic cocktail bar in the Northwestern United States and certainly belongs in the conversation for best bar in the world. From the hospitality to the spirit selection to the encyclopedic knowledge from the staff to the ambience, everything about the Zig Zag is pitch perfect.
