Description

The cuisine is "New American," which in this case means a cleanly delineated mix of hot, hearty, and haute ingredients with occasional Pan Asian and Mediterranean touches. Start with hamachi carpaccio sparkling with red chili sauce and meyer lemon, or, for a heartier beginning, oven pizza crowned with exotic mushrooms and truffle. Recommended entrees include Australian filet mignon with wild mushrooms, Indian spiced swordfish, and yellowtail snapper with spicy kimchee glaze. Fresh, hot, apple shortbread crumble with cardamom ice cream is as comforting as a pillow at 3 a.m.

Miami-Dade County restaurants may get a lot of national media attention for food, but when it comes to wine, eateries in Broward and Palm Beach counties win corks down. Indeed, of the thirteen South Florida restaurants that won the Wine Spectator... More »

    A Simple Plan

In the ultrasleek Boca Raton contemporary restaurant Zemi, you might not realize at first that the eatery has only one light fixture -- a dangling, almost beehive-shape, white-paned lamp that looks as though it were made for a '50s luncheonette.... More »

  • 2001 | Best Restaurant, Palm Beach

It only makes sense that this year's ribbon-taker here is last year's Best New Restaurant. We knew from the moment we stepped into this elegant bistro, owned by chef John Belleme and partner Allison Barber, that longevity could be billed along with homemade lobster won tons on the New American menu. The kitchen still turns out stimulating preparations of day-boat seafood in brothy nages, spice-crusted game birds, and cuts of beef and lamb moistened with demi-glace. Service is at worst... More »

  • 2000 | Best New Restaurant

If we could judge best new restaurant by pedigree alone, Zemi would still win. Located in Towne Center, this handsome, trendy spot is owned by executive chef John Belleme and manager Allison Barber, both of whom are veterans of a Dennis Max restaurant, Max's Grille in Boca Raton. The connection to Max is convenient, since Zemi itself used to be Nick and Max's and, before that, Maxaluna. In fact Stephen O'Leary, the former pastry chef at both Nick and Max's and Maxaluna, has stayed on at... More »
