Description

San Francisco's worst-kept secret may be Zeitgeist's huge beer garden, where throngs converge to share crowded picnic tables, smoke in the sun, and drink pitcher after pitcher of cold suds. The bar also recently upgraded and expanded its beer selection, offering many more taps of delicious microbrew goodness, and even built new backyard bathrooms (no more plastic Porta-Potties!) to accommodate the bladders of the masses. The punky bartenders are still notoriously — and justifiably — unwilling to tolerate rude yuppie customers, however, so be nice, tip well, and remember to program your favorite Black Flag songs on the jukebox.

  • 2012 | Best Hangover Cures

We don't even care if it's goddamn raining outside, when you find yourself hungover and you need help ridding your head of an ache, your belly of a sickness, or your mind of a fog, Zeitgeist is the place to do it. This place serves some of the greatest Bloody Marys in the city, and when you throw in the tasty burgers and outside seating, it's a guaranteed cure. Not only that, but there's no more braving stinky port-a-potties on really busy days either. There are -- gasp! -- actual,... More »

  • 2011 | Best Bloody Mary

At first you might be turned off by the abrasiveness of the bartenders, who don't act warm and friendly, especially when you order Bloody Marys. But this is a good thing -- you want your Bloody Marys to be as spicy and saucy as the bartender shaking them up. And there's no better spot to cure your hangover with a Bloody Mary and a burger. • 2007 | Best Outdoor Drinking Spot

This is the spot to drink beer outside with pals on a warm night or afternoon. A Mission destination, it has a great selection of beers, including some Belgian brews, which are mighty tasty. Bikers' two-wheeled steeds give the exterior a tough look, but the beer garden is mellow and pretty friendly. Porta Pottis along the edge serve the not-so-faint-of-heart. Numerous outdoor benches make it a great place to hang out with friends and/or cool coworkers. It's also a great place for smokers. A... More »

  • 2002 | Best Place to Drink Away a Sunday

On a Sunday afternoon, there is no mellower place to be in San Francisco than the courtyard at Zeitgeist. Hidden behind a somehow foreboding purple exterior on a block not quite in the Mission or the Castro, an eclectic mix of hipsters, bikers, and weekend warriors mingles among rows of picnic tables, passing around pitchers of beer, joints, and, occasionally, a damn good string-bean-garnished Bloody Mary. One of the city's best jukeboxes blasts a selection of tunes that's as mixed as the... More »

  • 2002 | Best Barbecue

With an enormous back patio and a diverse crowd, this "dive bar" has all the ingredients for a family picnic, but with family you would actually want to spend time around. The motto here is "Warm Beer, Cold Women, and Clean Rooms Cheap." Don't be fooled, though, the 25 beers on tap are the perfect temperature to complement the barbecued chicken, ribs, coleslaw, and corn bread. Grab a seat on the patio and wait for the grill master to yell your name through the bullhorn. In addition to... More »

  • 2001 | Best Bicycle Bar

Zeitgeist has long been known as a "biker bar," attracting a variety of motorcycle enthusiasts and other leather-sporting patrons. It should be emphasized, therefore, that Zeitgeist is an equal-opportunity biker bar, welcoming operators of the non-motorized variety with equally open arms. An enormous custom-built bicycle rack with room for dozens of cycles adorns the beer garden behind the bar. That allows bicyclists to enjoy a frosty pint in the garden on a warm day within eyeshot of their... More »

Who Makes SF's Best Bloody Mary? You Tell Us

    | Wed, August 31, 2011

A Bloody Mary is like pizza, suggests our reader Dean Bonner, who complained on a post yesterday that he can't find one to his taste in San Francisco. If you like thin crust pizza, you won't find even... More »
