Zaytoon Wraps, a fast-casual Middle Eastern restaurant located on Valencia Street in the Mission, was created by two brothers born and raised in San Francisco. The narrow slip of a room is tiled in gorgeous greens ("zaytoon" means "olive" in Arabic and its cognates), with bottles of Palestinian olive oil for sale on shelves near the register. Besides a smattering of Middle Eastern appetizer spreads, there are basic food choices here: falafel and shawarma, with elements of both laid out, minus lavash wrap, as a platter. Once you come to terms with the rather resistant lavash, the falafel's just fine, the lamb shawarma better. Chewy shreds of meat shaved from the rotisserie are tasty, but it's the mint-flecked yogurt sauce that makes it frolic. Opt for an add-on handful of feta, we imagine, and the thing would be damn near impossible to harness. Zaytoon serves high-quality ingredients including Niman Ranch lamb, Masami Ranch American Kobe beef, Wayne Farms all-natural free-range chicken, and locally baked breads.
