Description

Though the food at Z Cafe is ordered at a counter and delivered quickly, it's the kind of chow you don't want to rush through. Nor can you when the gyros are stuffed so full with vegetables and cheese the edges of the pita barely touch and the side salad is a meal in itself. The Greek part of the menu includes solvaki, dolmas and several types of gyros, plus potato balls with a crisp surface and gooey cheese and onion innards. But don't stop there. Z Cafe also offers hamburgers (the "Z" version has feta cheese and jalapeños), and breakfast is served all day, along with inexpensive pizzas in a variety of flavors and "create your own."

  • 2003 | Best Gyro

There are gyro sandwiches, and then there are gyro sandwiches. First, there's the thinly sliced mystery meat piled into a cold piece of flat bread and topped with a tomato and a little bland white sauce. That's not the gyro sandwich we're talking about. Z Café owner Nicholas Zotos sells gyro sandwiches that are consistently far above average. The bread is oven fresh, and the plentiful meat (not a composite) is tender and tasty. The sauce is tangy and complemented by fresh onions.... More »

  • 2002 | Best Gyro Sandwich

Better than a year-round Greek festival, the Z Café's gyro sandwich is amazingly pleasing, and well it should be. Owner Nicholas Zotos (he couldn't be Greek by any chance, could he?) apparently makes sure his gyro sandwich has the kind of texture and flavor that made people start loving this sandwich in the first place. The Greek flat bread is so fresh, it feels and tastes like it just came out of the oven. The lamb meat is grilled and seasoned to perfection. The sandwich has just... More »

  • 2001 | Best Pre-nap Meal

Located in a unyuppyfied section of East Dallas, Z Café has a funky, friendly divey feel that makes it a fine escape from the workplace grind. There's lots of Parthenon posters and white-and-blue flags to remind you it's Greek. The daily lunch specials, which run about $5.99, are taken off the café's menu of gyros, sandwiches, dolmas and such. The lamb gyro is only $6.95. Then there's the signature Z burger (feta cheese, grilled onions and jalapeños), which is a perfect start for t... More »

    Zzzz ...

It's hard not to like Z Café. Then again, like the sleepy forward coast of a comfortable marriage, it's hard to like it without working at it. But you will put forth the effort, because Z, with its sloppily stained black tables, azure trim, black... More »
