Anyone unfamiliar with Cantonese food will find it hard to feel lost ordering at Yuet Lee. In fact, it'd be hard to lose sight of this Chinatown restaurant. You could probably spot that electric-green exterior through the fog from the top of Coit Tower. Newcomers can't - and shouldn't - ignore the list of the Chinese restaurant's "10 famous dishes" taped up next to the kitchen window. Seafood, like steamed whole fish make the list, clams with black bean sauce, and the ultrafamous salt-and-pepper squid, still crackly and tender after three decades in business, as well as check out the spare ribs. The rice plates and chow fun are decent, but the fresh seafood is among San Francisco's best after-midnight (hell, after 10 p.m.!) dining options.
The good news is that you can feast on wonderful fresh seafood (fried squid, steamed whole flounder, pepper and salt roasted prawns in the shell) until all hours -- well, 3 a.m., which is late indeed in our fair city -- in this underdecorated but picturesque corner spot in North Beach, where you might even be able to find parking in the wee hours.
