Description

Tucked away in a grungy Tempe strip mall, this laidback dive bar evokes a small-town atmosphere with its crowd of working-class regulars. But despite its somewhat grimy appearance, the Yucca Tap is arguably one of the more popular live music joints in the PHX, and with good reason. College kids turn out in droves for Rockaroake night every Wednesday, as well as the rollicking open-mic night on Mondays. A more diverse bunch shows up for the weekly Valley Fever bluegrass and country affair every Sunday. It's even got an adjacent craft beer and premium whiskey lounge next door to the main bar, filled with a slew of top-shelf spirits, as well as arcade games and pool tables. Meanwhile, countless local rock, indie, and Americana acts have graced the elevated stage over the past decade, including the likes of Authority Zero, Miniature Tigers, The Necronauts, and Minibosses. And the best part about the place? There's never, ever a cover.

  • 2011 | Best Hip-Hop Night

After nine years of pumping out the jams, Blunt Club is as strong as ever, thanks to local artist Dumperfoo and resident DJs Pickster and Element. The Thursday-night tradition got its humble start in the dark confines of the now-defunct Priceless Inn and, after a couple moves, is currently enjoying its second year at Tempe's premier nightclub, the Yucca Tap Room. Every week, the Blunt Club team brings you the best local and national hip-hop, reggae, dubstep, funk and electro acts. Combine... More »

  • 2010 | Best Hip-Hop Night

To quote Nas on his 2002 track "Nothing Lasts Forever," everything will come to an end. When it comes to the Valley's volatile nightlife scene, that means your favorite club night -- no matter how popular it may seem -- will someday call it quits. Well, except for the Blunt Club, that is. The venerated hip-hop night launched in '02 and has stayed strong for eight effin' years, with no signs of pulling a Jam-Master Jay (RIP) anytime soon. Debuting at the Priceless Inn in Tempe, it... More »

  • 2009 | Best Karaoke with a Live Band

What's better than rocking out to karaoke How about doing it with a live band instead of a poorly translated laserdisc with incongruous video footage The four-member posse of Rockaroke has a repertoire of oldies-but-goodies and a few newer tracks ready for you to obliterate with your drunken renditions. Try belting out The Beatles' "Hey Jude" or Radiohead's "Creep." Whatever you croon, it'll sound better with a backing band. If you think it sounds too good to be true, we have one thing to... More »

  • 2008 | Best Open Mic Night

What better way to start the workweek than to watch people get onstage and share their talent Whether it's a longhaired hippie dude with a guitar doing a Simon & Garfunkel cover, a disgruntled college kid performing a spoken-word piece about the war in Iraq, or two inebriated girls just giggling at each other because they signed up on a dare, the open mic night at Yucca Tap Room offers a bit of entertainment for everyone. People can kick back and enjoy the low-pressure atmosphere while... More »

  • 2008 | Best Drinking Story

Mary Cope has tended bar at Yucca Tap Room for 22 years. A lot of her stories are too graphic (even for us) to print, but she does have one that qualifies as a classic.A man walks into the bar and orders a drink from Ms. Cope. She can tell right away that he's three sheets to the wind. She asks him to leave; when he refuses, she escorts him out the back entrance.A few minutes later, the man walks in the front entrance, makes eye contact with Cope, shakes his head and walks out. A few... More »

  • 2006 | BEST KARAOKE WITH A LIVE BAND

Question: What do you get when you mix cheap drinks, an open mic night, a cover band that calls itself Mother Trucker, and one of Tempe's favorite dive bars Answer: The best fucking karaoke night in town. Every Thursday night, members from local band the Zen Lunatics hit the stage at the Yucca Tap Room to back drunken wanna-bes living out their rock-star dreams. The song selection is excellent -- think Radiohead, Janis Joplin, Rolling Stones and CCR -- but don't expect the usual karao... More »

  • 2005 | BEST BAR IN TEMPE THAT (SHHH!) ALLOWS SMOKING

Kudos to the Yucca Tap Room for a courageous common-sense approach to the anti-smoking Nazis. At considerable financial risk (establishments that allow smoking can be fined up to $500 by the city, and snitches can rat to the police online), the Yucca keeps a healthy supply of Altoids tins behind the bar. They are not there to cure bad breath. Rather, the tins make dandy ashtrays, which can be quickly closed in case the cops show up. The tins are not available during live music performances... More »

  • 2004 | BEST VENUE FOR LOCAL ACTS

We'll always be nostalgic for the mighty Long Wong's on Mill, the demise of which, earlier this year, left us scratching our heads about the future of local music. But it didn't take long for us to learn that the Tempe scene didn't die, it just found a new home at the Yucca. Rock and roots bands like the Pistoleros, Gloritone, the Zen Lunatics, and Ghetto Cowgirl -- all popular Long Wong's alumni -- play here regularly, and there's no cover charge. Live music almost every night of the week... More »

  • 2003 | BEST STRIP MALL HOOT 'N' HOLLER

The Yucca Tap Room doesn't look like much from street level. The front marquee is nearly impossible to read at night from the street, and the entrance is obscured by rows of loading docks along the Southern Avenue strip mall where it resides. Open the door and walk in, however, and the place induces delighted shivers for the unpretentious faithful. The Yucca is a relaxed, redneck dive for straw-hat-wearing lovers of roadhouse rock and country music, a one-room joint with stage in the front,... More »

    Event Review: The Blunt Club

    | Thu, October 6, 2011

I've been here once for a hip-hop show from the midwest. real nice spot. Kinda crowded around the stage and bar, but nothing's wrong with bumping a few shoulders. Hopefully I'll be on the lineup to perform soon myself. www.soundcloud.com/zeedubb

If you're in the mood to go out and have some drinks, but don't feel like dressing up all decked out like you're going to Scottsdale, this is the place to be. THURSDAY nights are a must to go. The DJ's usually play underground music, the atmosphere is pretty chill, and no one's here to judge based on your looks. Heck, I've gone here with my dance crew after practice, came in our sweats, jumped on the dance floor, and had an amazing time. The drinks here are good, especially Bloody Mary's!
