Nic Lincoln makes a splendid ensemble dancer in any group, including the James Sewell Ballet, where he has performed for eight years, and recent guest appearances with Shapiro & Smith Dance. But his solo turns reveal a performer both versatile and voracious for roles to play, dance forms to conquer. Lincoln's wit, style, and fearless plunges into disparate worlds should make this concert a lively study in contrasts. Over the past few years, he has commissioned several female choreographers to create solos for him. Penny Freeh's "Paper Nautilus," initially inspired by Jerome Robbins's ballet "Fancy Free," yanks the character of a World War II sailor through time with soft-shoe references, music from the era, and vignettes evoking nostalgia, memory, coming of age, and death. Megan Mayer's "You might be expecting me..." props vulnerable offstage moments up against the onstage performance persona, while Kristen Van Loon's "More Love Hours Than Can Ever Be Repaid" was inspired by the 1980s Billboard pop-music countdown show, Solid Gold, and New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham's street-fashion lore. Judith Howard's "Dressage" coaxes Lincoln into some high-stepping maneuvers, and Venus de Mars will be on hand for additional hijinks. Lincoln, who had a rough time growing up gay, wants to provide an artistic role model for others. The concert forms a direct connection between dance and Outfront MN's vigorous action in support of LGBTQ youth, as those who have benefited from the organization's guidance will speak about their experiences at each show.
