Description

One of the most appealing things about Glendale's Yen Sushi & Sake Bar is how much it feels like a speakeasy. Tucked behind darkened windows, it's hard to tell if it's open, but it's buzzing inside. Cozy and casual, this is a reliable neighborhood spot for buttery sashimi, expertly prepared nigirizushi, and a huge variety of hybrid rolls that are oven-baked or tempura-fried. Whether you're craving traditional or unconventional sushi, Yen will satisfy your yen.

I was excited to try this place out, I heard they had really good rolls. I was astonished at how rude they were! We came in about 7:30 on a Friday night (06/09/12). It was decently busy and we had a large 10+ group coming in. We had called a day prior to make a reservation and they told us it was unnecessary. When we got there and put in for a table, they said they could not accommodate us at that time inside. We opted to sit on their patio and offered to accept tables as they opened. 15 minutes passed and we asked a decent waiter if we could order 4 sake & beers for the four of us that were already there. The waiter replied, “when I have a chance”, and walked inside. 10 minutes later he came back out without anything and waited on another table outside. Our friends had been there before and knew a very nice waitress and asked if they could talk to her, his reply very rudely was “she’s very busy” and again walked inside. At that point, we were completely disgusted with the way they treated us & decided to find a place that actually appreciates their customers. We ended up about 10 minutes away at K-Sushi on 43rd Ave & Olive/Dunlap. This place was AMAZING, better variety, great service, and more spacious. They not only accommodated, they apologized for the terrible experience at YEN SUSHI & gave us a great dining experience. Never again will we attempt YEN! Thank you K-Sushi, we WILL be back!

Living in Central Phoenix, I'm not about to state any allegiance between East Valley and West Valley restaurants. I'll go wherever there's good food to be had. But I can't deny the overwhelming surplus of self-consciously hip sushi spots in the... More »
