It's obvious from the outside that Ya Hala is not going to be a white-tablecloth kind of place. But that's okay, because what's on offer here is the honest article: Syrian food done traditionally and with surprising talent. From the free pita and hummus to the perfect grilled chicken and unbelievably good baklava, everything is a treat for both the adventurous eater and his wallet.
First things first: The service at Ya Hala Grill is terrible -- sometimes laughably so, sometimes maddeningly so. The building itself is little more than a cement bunker on Colorado Boulevard with half a bakery in front and a few tables in back, and the kitchen often seems to be working in its own little world, releasing your dinner in dribs and drabs and often completely out of order. Ya Hala isn't much to look at from the outside -- just a squat cement bunker hunkered down on Colorado Boulevard. As a matter of fact, it isn't much to look at from the inside, either. The lobby/bakery is a bit run-down, the dining room looks roughly used. But the food coming out of this place more than makes up for the unsightly digs. The space is small and more than a little ragged. The service runs at a pace somewhere between slow-but-friendly and glacial. And the menu seems oddly foreshortened. But at Ya Hala, all that matters is the food -- and the food is absolutely fabulous.
