If you're tired of wine bars that specialize in Italian or French wines, Xai Xai provides relief. The entire list of this Theatre District establishment, named after a beach resort in Mozambique, consists of South African wines, including pinotages, shirazes, merlots, and cabs. The pinotages are of the most interest, with an inauspicious start, big in the middle, then trailing off into pleasant spiciness. The food offers something of a disconnect--in general, it's too sugary to go well with the big reds Xai Xai pours. Still, it's a good chance to taste bunny chow (a curry-stuffed loaf of bread), droewars (Afrikaaner jerky), and biltong (farmers sausages). Delicious raw oysters, too.
If you'd also like a glass of wine with your snack and don't mind sitting a bit, go for the unusual dried-meat products at the South African wine bar Xai Xai. These include droewors (dried sausages of beef and lamb) and biltong (beef jerky), both chewy and yummy. You'll never look at a Slim Jim the same way again. More »
