In 1988, the Wynkoop Brewing Company became Denver's first brewpub. It's still a favorite hangout, and not just because Governor John Hickenlooper first started serving the public here. Besides pouring beers brewed on the premises, the Wynkoop cooks up everything from shepherd's pie to elk medallions to black-and-tan brownies. And after your meal, you can head upstairs for pool, or just over to the large, convivial bar for a few more rounds. The Wynkoop has a familiar lineup of beers on tap, from stouts to pilsners. If you see horse-drawn carts moving kegs of beer around downtown, they originated at the Wynkoop, which delivers beer locally via the horses.
A mixture of improv comedy, theater and audience participation.
Monthly free shows featuring different ensembles of the Denver Mandolin Orchestra.

Zagat recently released guides to both the fifty best plates of food and the best sources of caffeine in the country, and Denver makes both lists -- rightfully so. The legendary Buckhorn Exchange, 100... More »
Since the first wave of gold-hunters washed up on the banks of Cherry Creek, Denver has always attracted pioneers. In fact, Governor John Hickenlooper made this state's entrepreneurial spirit the focus of his State of the State speech this January. And no one better exemplifies that spirit than Hickenlooper, an East Coast-educated geologist who moved out to Colorado in the early '80s, was laid off in the middle of that decade's oil-and-gas bust, and joined with other adventurers to start... Flash back a hundred years and there's a good chance you'd see horses pulling carts loaded with beer from Denver's breweries to its saloons and restaurants. Now, thanks to the Wynkoop Brewing Company, you can see the same thing today. The brewpub, co-founded in 1988 by now-governor John Hickenlooper, began delivering kegs and cans of its handcrafted suds to accounts around downtown last April via horse and carriage as a way to bring back some of the Queen City's storied beer culture. And in... More »
With its creaking old floors, smoothed wooden fixtures and green lamps, the pool room on the second floor the Wynkoop Brewing Company forces you to stand at attention and show respect for another time and place in Denver history. And the beer's not bad, either. The pool hall includes twenty-plus billiards tables, shuffleboard and darts, and it features a bar back that was once part of the Tivoli Brewery. But it's the tables that matter -- tables where you can usually find Denver's... More »
Yes, it's the brewpub that helped define the LoDo neighborhood, but the Wynkoop Brewing Company is also the brewpub that continues to sustain that neighborhood. Well into its third decade and long past the days when co-founder John Hickenlooper would regularly hold forth at the bar, the Wynkoop found new relevance over the past year, expanding its beer list and adding events like the Parade of Darks and Kegs & Curds to such perennial favorites as the Denver Gorilla Run and the... For those of us who just know we're not going to be able to drag ourselves out of bed for Sunday brunch, the Wynkoop Brewing Company is a required last stop on Saturday nights. Because this brewpub not only sells its excellent brews by the glass, but also by the jug, to go. So if you know you're going to be in for a rough morning that will require some hair of the dog, remember to drop by the Wynkoop before last call for a growler of Quinn's Scottish, Railyard or (if you ask really nicely)... When the Wynkoop Brewing Co. opened almost twenty years ago in LoDo, there was no Coors Field, no sports bar every few steps, no brewpub every few steps past that. The Wynkoop was a pioneer not just in the microbrew industry, but also in this neighborhood, and for too many years, it's been taken for granted. But no more. Lately we've found ourselves heading to the Wynkoop on all sorts of occasions: when we needed a night out of the house, a place to watch the game, a spot to hold a... More »
What's a brewpub made of? Well, brew and a pub. And Wynkoop wins on both counts. It makes -- and sells on site -- more beer than any other Denver-area brewpub. And there's no question that it's pubbier than the rest. Warm, woody, comfortable and friendly, with a menu full of good food (get the vegetarian chili and have the kitchen add chicken). Plus, it does a lot of things with and for beer. For example, it was one of the few brewpubs in the region that duplicated the kind of beer made in... More »
Games are not just for kids, especially at the Wynkoop, where men and women rack billiards balls, smack pinball flippers and sweep shuffleboard tables in between sips of Railyard Ale. A huge, loft-like space above the brewery's table-and-chairs main floor, the Wynkoop's game room is an arcade of activity every night of the week. With skill levels that range from novice to professional, it's a great place to hone -- and show off -- your gaming chops. Rack 'em. More »
Wynkoop Brewing Co., Denver's oldest brewpub, sits in a historic building, and for a few years, the menu seemed as ancient as the space. But these days the kitchen is as hopping as what's brewing in those giant tanks, and the food is not only consistently good, it's cutting-edge fare. At no other brewpub would we be brave enough to try ahi tuna with a wasabe-based sauce and coconut sticky rice, or beer-battered rock shrimp with habanero-pineapple tartar sauce. And where else in town would... More »
Great beer. I have heard that they are creating a new beer for the new TUT exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. Sick!
Still the same Wynkoop as it was years ago. Which is why I love this place.
