The Venice outpost of this perpetually pressed-in downtown sausage and beer hall can often feel just as cramped with lithe young drinkers, but the best moments at Wurstküche come during those in-between hours. The exotic sausages (rattlesnake-and-rabbit, anyone?) and twice-fried Belgian frites are fantastic any time, but you'd certainly have more room to swallow in the post-lunch, pre-dinner weekday hours. The open brickwork, easy wood lines and frosted glass seem more inviting when the room has thinned a bit, and you'll actually have time to peruse the carefully constructed beer list. Fan favorites like La Chouffe and Chimay are offered on tap, while bottles of Kwak and Aventinus remain popular options. No matter what your beverage of choice, sipping it slowly in the pre-rush hours makes all the difference.
Wurstkuche is guaranteed to be a great time-- always.
I've visited both the Venice and DTLA joint multiple times, and the atmosphere is always just so much fun. The people are lively, the music is good, and the food/drinks options are plentiful not to mention delicious. Service is always friendly/prompt which is impressive for the amount of people they're serving, parking available. The interior set-up is communal, with some bar seats, but either way, it's a great way to chat it up with your neighbors over some beer and fries and meet some new friends.
My go-to order is always the chicken apple with an apple ale. FLORIS APPLE ALE. This is definitely not one of the fancy foreign beers. I honestly picked it because compared to the rest of the beer menu, I understood apple. I like apple. I LOVED the beer. And it's what I've gotten every time. However, they also have a great selection of beer, Belgian, German, all your likings.
Wurstkuche is also known for their exotic sausages of rattlesnake, duck, rabbit, etc. They all taste pretty gamey to me, but it's tasty nonetheless. For you vegetarians out there, no fear! They have three vegetarian sausages which are also delicious-- my personal favorite is the one with potatoes.
If you have a bigger appetite than I do, the Belgian fries, as everyone says, its awesome. Tastes like double fried- crispy fries. Grab all the condiments that you can (bbq, chipotle ketchup, pesto...) and you are good to go my friend.
Come with a friend, or a large group, it very well accommodates both. Even if you're on a bad date or someone you don't particularly enjoy (haha) people watching is always so entertaining in between the beardy hipsters, young foodies, and trendy LAers. Either way, always good vibes at Wurstkuche.
What I love about Wurstkuche is that after so many times here, I still have not yet mastered how to pronounce this place. Come for the exotic sausages (rattlesnake and rabbit) and Floris Apple Ale, leave extremely happy.
Good sausage. Great beer. Good group of people behind the counter.
Revisiting the french fry, which we have already exhaustively sampled in the past, is a particular beast. The ongoing casualization of restaurants means straightforward, beloved classics are the orde... More »
Those who have visited this second incarnation of wildly popular sausage purveyor Wurstküche on a Friday night or Saturday lunch might be bowled over by the suggestion of "quiet." Prime time is marked by lines out the door for food, a deejay bolstering the alternative-club atmosphere and communal tables packed with Venice's finest flannel. Come after the lunch rush but before the dinner masses and the ambience changes entirely. Exposed brick protects you from the oppressive traffic of... More »
