Description

Chewing gum -- and the man most closely identified with the sticky-sweet stuff, William Wrigley Jr. -- built this lovely, 1930s-vintage manse that overlooks the area surrounding the Arizona Biltmore from atop a patrician, 100-foot bluff; the palatial digs were a golden-wedding-anniversary present from WW to his wife, Ada. Prepackaged meat by-product keeps the place going, though, in the form of Geordie Hormel, the so-called "Son of Spam," who's turned the facility into a private club and formal eatery.

  • 2007 | BEST THANKSGIVING DAY ESCAPE

Unless you're John-Boy Walton or Martha Stewart -- or a glutton for emotional punishment -- you're probably ambivalent about Thanksgiving. There's that enforced familial interaction (blah) and the infernal "dead turkey clock" that keeps ticking off the passing years. For example, if you've only eaten 10 birds, you're probably safe for a while longer -- yet there's that yawning eternity of Thanksgivings looming ahead. If you're 75, you're reached the downhill slope of the turkey... More »

  • 2005 | BEST MANSION

There's a lot to love about the Wrigley Mansion, built by chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. for his wife, Ada, and now owned by Phoenix's own jazz-playing recluse Geordie "Son of Spam" Hormel, heir to the meatpacking fortune. The interior of the regal mansion is a little dusty and threadbare in places, but the patina only adds to the place's old-school charm. First, there's Geordie's restaurant and bar at the Wrigley Mansion Club, which offers tasteful live music on select evenings.... More »

  • 2000 | Best Room With a View

Must be nice to be rich. We've never gotten a 50th wedding anniversary gift like the one Ada Wrigley received from her husband, William, back in 1929. For his beloved bride, the chewing-gum magnate put a bow on a $1.2 million mansion, perched high atop a hill overlooking the Arizona Biltmore. But we can pretend we're well-off, since current owner Geordie Hormel found a loophole in regulations that require the home be used as a private club only. Membership in Hormel's club costs only $10 a... More »
