For the past several years, the open-mike/spoken-word scene has been burgeoning in Miami. Words & Wine, an open-mike showcase, was initially held in promoter Nikki Rodriguez's living room as a way for friends and lovers of poetry to get together and whine -- ahem -- wine. This informal event, using only social media marketing for promotion, drew more than 50 people. Rodriguez soon realized her crew needed to get out of her casa and move to an official venue.
After some trials and tribulations with other locations, Words & Wine has landed at PAX, a perfect spot to showcase mushrooming musicians and prosperous poets with its dim lighting, hip decor, and fashionable furnishings. The event grew so quickly and has such a devoted following that New Times declared Words & Wine best open mike. The event takes place every Wednesday. Get there early to ensure good seats or to sign up for the stage.
