Open the door at Wooden Spoon Cafe & Bakery, and you'll be hit by a blast of dessert-perfumed air, the sound of regulars chatting in line and a view of the chalkboards listing that day's offerings. Husband-and-wife team Jason and Jeanette Burgett worked in the restaurant industry for years before opening the Wooden Spoon in the summer of 2010. They envisioned a neighborhood cafe that relied on high-quality local ingredients to turn out a menu of well-crafted breakfast and lunch dishes in addition to housemade baked goods, everything from macaroons to lemon meringue to chocolate turtles. And they created a warm, welcoming spot that's as sweet as the treats, with a handful of wooden spoons and photos of chickens adorning the yellow walls, '40s-era jazz humming from the speakers, and a view of the open kitchen just beyond the counter, where the chef rolls out crusts and stuffs sandwiches.
Lindsay Meredith drinks a lot of coffee, and last month, she decided to put that fact to good use. During one of her frequent trips to the Wooden Spoon Cafe & Bakery, the Highlands-area singer-songw... More »

In the Best of Denver 2011, Lower Highland rated the award for Best Restaurant Neighborhood, and with good reason: In the past few years, the blocks on the bluffs above I-25 have added an incredible n... More »
It's easy to go crazy at the pastry case at Wooden Spoon, a tiny bakery tucked into a row of Highland storefronts. Every time we stop in, we want to order one of almost everything. We can't pass up the macarons; the egg white-and-almond-based cookies, filled with buttercream, melt away into nothing on the tongue. Nor can we turn down a lemon meringue mini-pie, the individual-sized flaky crust packed with smooth, tangy lemon filling and topped with ethereally light peaks of meringue. The... More »
Saunter into Jason and Jeanette Burgett's stylish meet-and-greet bakery, and you'll be immediately bombarded with sensory overload -- the kind that makes your double chin drop in disbelief. If the scents of exquisite fresh-baked cookies, pastel-hued French macaroons, ooey-gooey sticky buns that rise like the sun, perfect fruit tortes, pies, cakes and scones don't give you a sugar high, biting into any one of their sublime creations will. Wooden Spoon is a fantasy world of flirtatious... More »
