Description

Wolfe's Barbeque has unusual hours, and it isn't open on weekends. But it's worth putting up with any scheduling difficulties to get a taste of owner Louis Wolfe's hickory-smoked meats, offered in servings as small as a sandwich and as large as a full, take-home buffet spread. You'll find all the usual barbecue suspects -- ribs, brisket, chicken, hot links -- as well as barbecued tofu, dry-rubbed with Wolfe's special blend of spices. Order at the counter (all the traditional side dishes are also available), then seat yourself in the small, casual, friendly dining room. No charge for the entertaining view of Colfax outside.

  • 2005 | Best Pecan Pie

Wolfe's Barbeque makes tasty pulled-pork sandwiches, and its barbecued tofu is legendary. But the true, can't-miss item here is owner Louis Wolfe's pecan pie. The crust is light and flaky, and the pecan filling has the texture of chiffon on the tongue. Not too dense or too sweet, it's the perfect post-barbecue treat. Wolfe sells his homemade confection by the slice, but if you ask nicely, he may sell you the whole pie. More »

  • 2003 | Best Capitol Education While NoshingWolfe¹s Barbeque

Wolfe's Barbeque, a jewel-box-sized restaurant on Colfax, feels like a Southern lunch place. But head cook and bottle washer Louis Wolfe is a Kansan by birth and a Denverite by choice. So much so that his walls are lined with collectible postcards of area buildings that date back to the 1900s -- and he can tell the story of each one. The Section 8 housing at Colfax and Grant used to be the Grand Argonaut Hotel, for example, and Temple Emmanuel was stunning in its early glory. As Wolfe gives... More »

Over the two decades that he's operated Wolfe's Barbeque, Louis Wolfe has seen many a rib joint come and go. The reason so much barbecue bites the dust? "Other people don't think it's as good as you do," says Wolfe. "To you, it's a beautiful baby,... More »

There are those barbecue fans who claim you can get the same flavor with an electric smoker that you can by burning charcoal (and most of the fans who claim this are purveyors of electric smokers). I disagree, as do many barbecue purists, includin... More »
