Located on the site of Charles Phan's first restaurant, Slanted Door, Wo Hing reflects everything the restaurateur has learned over the course of 16 years and a half-dozen restaurants: smart cocktails, fascinating wine and tea lists, and an aesthetic with the cool polish of a Brancusi sculpture. Only here Michelle Mah is preparing Cantonese home cooking — grandma dishes like scrambled eggs with pork belly, and stir-fried baby bok choy with mushrooms. Sometimes the upscaling seems pointless (the rice porridge, the desserts), but dishes such as the soup dumplings with five-spice-scented pork, and Sichuan red-braised lamb show a subtle creativity and precise cooking.
