A gorgeous postmodern general store that one-ups the "locavore" bit; it has its own farm. Winslow's Home sports a kickass kitchen that serves up soups and sandwiches way better than most. The beef brisket sandwich, its meat roasted overnight and piled high between slices of bread and Havarti cheese, has gained a loyal following, and with good reason. Go early in the day or it'll be sold out. Other sandwiches include the chicken-bacon club, a reuben and a gooey grilled cheese. There are soups and quiches du jour, as well as a tempting array of baked goods. A (very limited) dinner menu is offered after 5 p.m., and egg sandwiches are available for breakfast.
St. Louis' neighborhoods are gems in their own right: full of history, great people and, as far as Gut Check is concerned, fantastic food. Each week we'll take you into a specific neighborhood and poi... More »
Guess where we ate this vegetable tort and you could win $25 to Hokkaido Steak & Sushi Buffet (660 North U.S. Highway 67, Florissant; 314-921-6666). Hint: We dined at restaurant in University City. R... More »
Update: Thursday, December 20, 11:23 a.m. This morning a reader sent Gut Check a note about Red Lion, one of the St. Louis restaurants that Jimmy Kimmel mentions in the above video. We surmised he mis... More »
The Veggielante has had it up to here with people bitching that St. Louis restaurants are vegetarian unfriendly. Sure, we'd like to see more restaurants offering more meatless dishes, but there are ex... More »

Sometimes after a busy workday, fumbling through the freezer for dinner suffices just fine. Other nights you know you deserve better. Such times are when you head to Winslow's Home. The to-go case of this general-store-and-more is full of fresh-made, ready-to-heat-and-eat items that switch out based on seasonality. You'll find supper-worthy dishes ranging from satisfying lasagna to hearty soups, and from filling meatball sub sandwiches to delicate, delish quiche. There's cookie dough, fresh... More »
Walking into Winslow's Home feels a bit like going back in time, like popping into one of the general stores that appear periodically in the Little House books, those magical wonderlands where the Ingalls family stocked up on salt pork, bolts of calico and the sticks of horehound candy that Laura and Mary so rarely got to savor. Winslow's makes you want to buy all of that, plus adorable things that modern technology has made obsolete like butter churns and washtubs. But maybe you'll want to... More »
Winslow's Home has the feel of an earlier era -- a happier, healthier time when the poached eggs on special were freshly plucked from a backyard coop and accented with fresh herbs just harvested from the garden. Honest, delicious food. Cheerful chitchat. A place to linger. The cozy storefront that Ann Sheehan Lipton selected for her eco-friendly market and eatery was a general store when it was built back in 1926, and the chef she installed, Cary McDowell, is a gent with a bent toward bo... Fans of the brisket sandwich at Winslow's Home lurk in the open, like paparazzi. They pretend to browse the wares of this throwback general store/café and dream of the tender, thinly sliced brisket roasted overnight, basted with a beguiling jus and piled high between toasted flaxseed bread. They know that the time between the beginning of lunch and the moment -- the dreaded, inevitable moment -- when the brisket sells out is all too brief. You must be ready to pounce! Those... More »
