Phil Romano's venture into the no-frills, white paper bag hamburger market is nestled right in Highland Park. The thing that sets it apart from other burger joints is Kobe beef, that prized meat harvested from the Japanese Wagyu cattle (or the Texas-bred version) that is perhaps the richest, tastiest beef on earth. But to get the full benefit of this flavor, you must order your burger rare or medium-rare.

Not everything Phil Romano touches turns to gold. We Oui slipped off the landscape on a trail of French kitsch greased with red lipstick. Lobster Ranch got caught in a chowder undertow. Eatzi's nearly succumbed to a vicious bite by the Big Apple. ... More >

The Berryhill Baja Grill Cantina chain has locations all over. Most are big and new with great bars and TVs, which I like, but my favorite is this original one in River Oaks. It's tiny inside, but still has a bar you can sit at and watch a game. It has a patio, but it's also pretty small. Best to go at an off-peak time. Everything here is ridiculously great. I always get the combo plate with a grilled fish taco, spinach/corn enchilada, black beans and rice, or my best friend and I will go sit and drink for hours and order a grilled fish taco, white queso and guacamole. Great margaritas! They have $1.99 fish tacos every Monday night.
