You'll have to go around several big-headed porcelain folk to get to your organic arugula and imported cheeses at the downtown Whole Foods Market. At the door to the grocery store, Akio Takamori's Young Woman, Girl, Mother and Child are impediments and symbols of welcome, though the glances they direct at each other are indirect. The three sculptures are painted in neutral tones, black on white, touched with pigment at the cheeks, ears, and ankles. The mother's skirt has a stripe tinged in yellow, while the child on her back is the only one with a solid yellow shirt and shoes. And, strangely enough, the girl is the largest of the group, out of scale with the other two—probably 7 feet tall, at least.
