The place where fast food began, White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas by Billy Ingram, who must have been a fresh-onion fan (every White Castle burger is grilled atop a handful of chopped onions). Long known as the home of the original slider, White Castle has continued to crank out the firsts, which include First Place to Offer Fried Chicken in the Shape of an Onion Ring (see: White Castle Chicken Rings), First Fish Slider (not grilled atop onions, but distinctive in its own right), and First to Put Holes in the Burgers So They Cook Faster. Another first really expands on the burger-is-life ideology that White Castle riffs on, namely its Frozen Sliders: mini cheeseburgers that go from your freezer to your microwave and presumably quell any 2 a.m. cravings for food from the world's oldest hamburger stand.
