CLOSED West Indies Soul, formerly of St. Paul, now in the Midtown Global Market, serves the best of two worlds: home-style cooking from the Caribbean islands and the American South. That means they've got rib tips, chicken strips, and Cajun fried catfish to pair with all manner of fried okra, hush puppies, and plantains, plus greens, vegetable succotash, and candied yams. (The tuber mash certainly has enough sugar to satisfy dessert cravings, or there's always peach cobbler or sweet potato pie.) On the Caribbean side, you'll find jerk chicken, Jamaican hot beef patties, coco bread, and homemade ginger beer. Once a week, West Indies offers Deep South Sundays, which offers one meat, two sides, one bread, and dessert for $11. The dining area, a bus-your-own food court, is nothing fancy, but it's a great spot to soak up the market's cross-cultural bustle.

It's Sunday and you have a choice: go home and visit Mom, or head to the Midtown Global Market to catch Deep South Sundays at West Indies Soul Food. While Mom might do your laundry, she's also going to ask if you have a boyfriend. Again. That puts the win solidly with West Indies Soul Food, where on Sundays $11 gets you a meat of your choice, two sides, bread, and dessert, with options ranging from creamy homemade macaroni and cheese and fried chicken to cornbread dressing and gooey peach... You're going to have to get up on a Sunday to score this one, and you're going to have to bus your own table. That's because the fine Caribbean cooks behind St. Paul's West Indies Soul serve their soul food special, Deep South Sundays, just one day a week. And they do it at their new outpost in the fabulously rehabbed Sears complex on Lake Street in Minneapolis, which boasts all their tasty standards, but no table service. Don't be deterred: $11 nets you two sides and one each of West... More »
