Description

The puffy, slightly pear-shaped popovers that arrive with your cocktail aren't the most memorable aspect of a meal at celebrity chef Tyler Florence's Wayfare Tavern. Conceived as a fancy turn-of-the-20th-century bar, the multistoried restaurant's menu includes a brawny Hangtown Fry; unctuous steak tartare; fried chicken; with unfussy slabs of meat and fish aplenty. Its rooms hum with business lunches and stylish imbibers. There are heirloom tomatoes on your plate, rustic antlers on the wall, and a whole lot of iPhones blinking. It's old California, rendered all splashy and new.

Now that cooking has become entertainment and cooks our favorite performers, the counter is no longer the worst place in the restaurant to sit. Some counter spots require reservations, while others are the only seats you can easily score. Eat by yourself, and you're dining with company. Sit with a friend, and there are a million activities to comment on. Just remember: If you're eavesdropping on the cooks, they can probably hear you, too.Bar Crudo655 Divisadero (at Grove),... Poppin' Fresh: Wayfare Tavern's Airy Alternative to Bread

    | Mon, July 26, 2010

Saucers crowned with puffy, slightly pear-shaped popovers seemingly trumpeted the breakfast-y side of Wayfare Tavern's all-day menu the huge, disc-shaped Hangtown fry, the steak and eggs but we can't ... More »

This place is awesome. The light airy buns they serve with fresh whipped butter are so flavorful and if you try one thing on the menu.
