Nostalgia hits like a ton bricks at this club, adorned with framed photos and artwork of pop culture past. Every inch of wall and ceiling space is covered with something here: B-movie posters, random art, framed pin-up girls giving their best sexyface, a collection of dead, vintage televisions, and weird alien fetuses housed in glass bottles like so many formaldehyde frogs. The TV sets that do work display obscure exploitation and indie-flicks. This hip watering hole has a venue side with a tall stage, booming sound system and enough seating in the form of '50s dinette sets to make Betty Draper jealous. In its storied history, the Way Out Club has hosted many a music group, ranging from psychedelic jam bands to all-girl garage rockers. Both the bar and show areas are spacious, providing ample room for the occasional interpretive dance, or punk rock flailing. The booze selection looks keen, and this spot stands to be a rare haven for hippies and hipsters alike. Just don't forget to give Angus, the Way Out's resident feline, some love; he's really the one running the place.
It's the first Tuesday of the month, which means its time for Super-8 Movie Madness. Curator Tom Stockman has been presenting a series of themed programs, but this month he's decided to forgo the organizing concept and just go big. Tonight at 8... More »
Stacked. That's what this weekend is -- stacks of records, stacks of bands, stacks and stacks of shows. There's so much going on lately that its a surprise RFT Music hasn't toppled over like a teeteri... More »
When an elected official decries the current state of film and television and issues a call for a return to the "good old days," sit that idiot down and show him the eleven-minute-long featurette, "Polly Tix in Washington." The 1933 short stars a... More »
The legend of John Belushi (and the apparent talentless nature of his brother Jim) have partially obscured just how funny he could be. John Belushi could make you laugh just by arching one eyebrow and cocking his head -- and no one could go from... More »
Eclectic Trombonist Big Sam will perform with his self-described "Noladelic powerfunk" band, the Funky Nation, on February 8th at the Old Rock House. Matt Pond PA visits the Firebird, February 15th... More »
I'm not sure if these people are independently wealthy or what. They certainly don't care much about treating customers well...at least not the people over 27, who are generally the ones with the money to spend. The lady is especially rude and should not be allowed to do anything that involves customer service.
A great place to hang out for live music or performance shows!
Looking for a place for your band to play? This just may be the spot! Vintage style with an urban twist...this place is fun to hang out at and there is plenty to look at!
While the wave of digital jukeboxes (currently invading a bar near you) might offer thousands of titles on their screens, a good jukebox is all about expression, a bar's way of showing you what it's all about via a handful of albums. Appropriately, the discs that fill the sticker-splattered jukebox at the Way Out Club offer a glimpse into the joint's psychobilly soul. With a fine selection ranging from the local scene that includes the Trip Daddys and 7 Shot Screamers to roots country like... More »
He left you. And who can blame him? You suck; you're worthless; you'll never love again. Drag your sorry ass to the Way Out Club. Sit at the bar, so the wall will isolate you from the pounding rock of the stage in the next room. Ask the bartender for something strong. You'll get it in spades. Three drinks in, you'll pay more attention to that bartender: Bob Putnam, who's no stranger to heartache himself. But look over there: It's Bob's wife Sherrie, proof positive that even if you don't get... More »
The Way Out Club could easily win in other, more music-oriented categories, as it did last year, when we deemed it Best Rock & Roll Bar. Indeed, the beloved saloon has live music almost every night, an impressive percentage of which is good to great. But we love the Way Out for other reasons, primarily aesthetic ones. Simply put, it's just so damned pretty, with its high ceilings, its dim green glow, its magnificent oak bar. It's located in a fairly tough neighborhood -- choose your parking... More »
On the right night, you can find some great rock & roll at the Way Out Club's new location on South Jefferson (at Gravois), but that's not what makes it the best rock club in town: It's the venue itself that rocks so hard. Great bars have great bar staff. In the heyday of the old Cicero's, for example, there was an unforgettable series of sirens behind the spigots: Heather, Jennifer, Eve, and so on. These women all displayed various admixtures of gut-splitting sexiness and seen-it-before... More »
