The pub's interior is so authentically Irish, you almost expect a peat fire to be burning. Instead, you'll have to get a glow off the Irish brews on tap, including Harp and Guinness. The fare's a bit inconsistent, comprising American (Buffalo wings), British (bangers and mash), and Irish (oak-smoked salmon) favorites. The Irish standards, particularly the beef stewed with Guinness and served with homemade brown bread, are handled best. Have a nightcap for dessert with whiskey-laced, bread-and-butter pudding. Enjoy an Irish breakfast on weekends.
Pulling on the "Kiss Me, I'm Wasted" T-shirt and a green-and-white striped top hat for St. Patrick's Day won't score you any points for creativity, but on a holiday that's become as mainstream and boo... More »
"So what do you think of the peace process in Northern Ireland?" I asked Mark Rohleder, co-owner of Waxy O'Connor's, the five-month-old Irish pub located on Seventeenth Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale. It seemed a reasonable question to ask.... More »
This Irish pub has lots going for it, with full-bodied beers like Guinness on tap and a full menu with comfort food like shepherd's pie. Drink enough pints while sitting in one of its dark corners and you might actually feel like you're visiting the Emerald Isle. But the real action is outside, on Waxy's covered front patio, where yachties — the captains and crews of those multi-million-dollar floating exuberances — hang when ashore. Why Waxy's? It's just always been that way, since the place opened in 1997. Its proximity to Port Everglades and several large marinas likely helps draw the international boat-hand crowd. Rugby and football matches on the telly help, too. And the breezy front porch is sailor heaven.

There's a hedge between Waxy O' Connor's and the busy 17th Street Causeway that serves to enclose a rollicking outdoor seating section, where pints of Guinness and Bass are consumed by hearty young men and women. Comfortable swinging tables, TV sets tuned to sports channels, and a diverse crowd of well-traveled yacht hands add up to a party for the senses. Inside, the dark-wood bar is considerably more quaint, though equally packed. Expats sit idly at the bar sipping beer, ready to dispense... More »
