Warung Kario is the first Surinamese warung (food stall) to open in the city, offering food native to the Javanese population of the former Dutch Guiana, who were first transported to South America from the South Pacific over a century ago. There are ample chicken kebabs soaked in chunky green-peanut sauce, sweet fried plantains, Dutch-leaning turnovers and cookies, and such fortifying soups as saoto, which features eggs, bean sprouts, chicken, and potatoes in a tart broth. Most of the food is displayed cafeteria-style, and vegetarians with thrill to delicious composed salads dressed with peanut sauce or coconut milk.
