Ward 6 is a neighborhood bar with surprising food and solid cocktails. The pub is in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood of East St. Paul, in a building once owned by Hamm’s Brewery. Its centerpiece is a majestic mirror-and-oak bar, serving horseradish-heavy bloody Marys, alcoholic milkshakes, smartly mixed cocktails, and a wide range of beers. But owners Eric Foster and Bob Parker have not forgotten the food, which includes a few surprises like charcuterie from chef Liz Olson, such as silky chicken liver pate, slightly smoky speck, rich duck rillettes, and pickled pork terrine. Even diner standards like the Reuben are elevated by house-made corned beef. You'll find other simple but well-made specialties like Asian-style pork ribs and beef-fat-fried fish and chips, plus breakfast daily and brunch on weekends, making this a most welcome addition to the neighborhood.
