Romance is different things to different people. To you, it might be the roughly six fireplaces in the charming Victorian dining rooms at W.A. Frost, or the gorgeous summer patio, with its trees soaring four stories above the flowering plantings and candles on the garden-party-perfect brick patio. For us, it might more be the fantastic 1,100-bottle wine list with its beguiling under-$40 section, and it might also be the ambitious, forward-looking cooking. Factor in the single-estate coffees, unique artisanal cheeses, perfect tea service, and luxurious desserts, and you'll soon be checking your jacket to see if Cupid's arrows left any visible marks, and asking your date, "Hey, does that firelight in your eyes come from the room, the food, or me?" Reservations are recommended--and reservations on Valentine's Day are recommended about three years out.

It's relatively rare -- maybe even a blue moon-level occasion -- for a chef, particularly one at a new restaurant, to be able to go out on the town and have someone else cook for them. So when local c... More »

When the sky is blue and the warm breezes of summer are flowing, pretty much anywhere you can sit outside, sip a cold beer, and get a burger has some positive points. But time spent outdoors at W.A. Frost elevates a simple outdoor meal into a sublime experience. Its patio is vast and stunningly beautiful, with vines creeping up the brick of the historic building and the petunias and azaleas bursting with color. The variety of seating -- bar stools, couches, and big comfy chairs, as well... More »
It's been almost four years since chef Russell Klein took over the kitchen at St. Paul's most venerable old restaurant, W.A. Frost and Company, and in that time he has managed to transform a reliable and occasionally interesting restaurant into the most delightful and consistently surprising spot in St. Paul. Where to start? Klein's food is that rare combination of original and comforting--everyone loves homemade strudel, but when it's rendered as an appetizer filled with duck confit... More »
The only way we can ever make a decision in this category is to hop into our immersion tank, close the overhead doors, float, and go to our safe let's-pretend place: okay. The phone rings. It's someone from out of town; they want to take you to dinner anywhere in St. Paul, tonight. Where do you pick? The answer this year is W.A. Frost, for several reasons. First, the food: Chef Russell Klein isn't just a talent with a knife. He keeps the restaurant's menu ever-fresh with surprising... More »
Are wine lists like gardens? If you really care about them, yes. There's the list at Manny's steakhouse, which is kind of like nothing but prize-winning super dahlias and hybrid roses the size of your head, the one garden you'd want to go to if you were taking pictures to surprise the folks back home. There's the list at the Modern, which is like a small cottage garden seen in glorious bloom: Every plant in it has been picked by the deep love of the gardener, according to the strength of... More »
Located in St. Paul's historic Cathedral Hill neighborhood, W.A. Frost recalls an era when dining out was an elegant event deserving of top hats and elbow-length white gloves. In the winter, brick fireplaces warm rooms lined in Victorian paintings. On the patio in the summer, twinkling white lights snake through the overhanging branches, illuminating the colorful coleus and purple geraniums of the patio garden. Though the patio is stamped with Frost's signature quaint charm, white plastic... More »
Ever since chef Russell Klein, veteran of the famed Danube kitchen in New York City, took over Frost's, the place has been marvelous. And not just better than it's ever been, but better than we ever imagined it could be. Out with the creamy old country club dishes, in with strikingly elegant arrangements like green and white asparagus stacked front to back and side by side, like a log-raft of spring. In addition to spectacular food, the restaurant now also serves many needs: Mussels with... More »
Everybody knows that W.A. Frost has more romance than the Love Boat, more charm than a whole factory run of that cereal the leprechaun shills for, a patio that's more beautiful than a pyramid stack of Miss Universe contestants, and more fireplaces than God in His Heaven. But did you know that W.A. Frost is a-changing? It's true. The corner locale recently debuted a wine list with scads of great choices under $30 a bottle and hired a new chef from out East (one Russell Klein, who comes to... More »
