Local dancer Jocquese Whitfield, aka JoQ, is the giant brain behind the new Vogue and Tone class (and a similar course at ODC). Why now, so many years after Paris Is Burning, and the Madonna song? Who cares? The class combines strenuous exercise with runway- and queen-inspired style; it’s such a brilliant idea that it can easily cause a “Where have you been all my life?” reaction. JoQ gives an isolation-based warm up, teaching you to move your chest or your butt or your head without moving the rest of your body — isolations are fascinating, difficult, and look like witchery when done correctly. JoQ then moves on to teach the six elements of voguing, and he also tells some history, but probably not about Madonna.
