One couldn't tell just by looking, but this Chinese restaurant doesn't serve any animal products; it's 99 percent vegan. The "meats" here--found both on the menu and the constantly changing buffet--are made with textured vegetable protein or are tofu look-alikes. There are also purely vegetable dishes--no fakers--including stir-fried spicy zucchini, veggie lo mein and crunchy spring rolls. Like Suma Veggie Café, its sister restaurant, Veggie Garden is as customer-friendly as it is animal-friendly. Its pantry and fridge and freezer cases also offer non-animal household goods, foods and imitation meats it uses in the dishes.
Even the chain grocery stores are stocking Boca burgers, Gardenburgers and other fake meat now. But those who want the good stuff--the filet mignon and caviar of the vegetarian world, if you will--can find the largest selection at the Veggie Garden restaurant stacked in freezer cases at the back of the dining room by the buffet. Veggie Garden is Chinese food without livestock or pets. This restaurant serves fare void of animal products, preservatives, food coloring or MSG. Veggies are stir-fried, sautéed and otherwise cooked and sauced with simulated scraps of beef, chicken, pork, shrimp and fish made of soy proteins. Yum yum. More »
