Opened in 1986, this was one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in Little Saigon, downtown. Since Vietnamese food was still a novelty in the '80s, Van Loc also served Chinese food and never stopped, although you're better off sticking with the Vietnamese offerings. The menu is extensive and features many family-favorite recipes. The place is large and busy, but tables turn quickly - although service can be erratic. Try the vermicelli with egg rolls or one of the clay pots.

You know the drill. Semi-fatty discs of medium-rare beef stewed with chicken broth, pork bits and glass noodles in a steaming bowl as big as your head.
