  • 2011 | Best Asian Market

Craving shrimp-flavored potato chips Check the snack aisle. Looking for live lobsters Select from the tank. Planning a party Order a whole suckling pig at the deli. When it comes to Asian cuisine, Uwajimaya has Seattleites covered. One of the largest Asian grocery retailers in the Pacific Northwest, this family-owned chain provides a seemingly impossible selection of goods from countries like Japan, China, and the Philippines. At Uwajimaya, grocery shopping is not a mundane chore, but an... More »

  • 2011 | Best Fresh Seafood Counter

At the veritable aquarium of Pacific Northwest sea life that functions as the seafood counter at Uwajimaya in the International District, the tanks are swimming with clams, crab, and a vast array of oysters, sold at startlingly fair prices. The section is so impressive that food tourists train their video cameras on display cases stocked with filets of wild-caught salmon, halibut, and countless obscure finned creatures. • 2009 | Best Carb-on-Carb Action Since Hawaii Invented the Loco Moco

The adventurous-meat-eating trend seems to be cresting. Within the year, I predict Bizarre Foods' Andrew Zimmern will announce he's giving up roast bat and braised witchetty grub forever to open a burger stand, and all those professed tripe addicts will admit they've eaten as many off cuts of pig and cow as they can stomach. With Dr. Atkins discredited--well, dead--radical carb-loading will become the passion of foodistas. We'll be dousing our spaghetti with sugar, eating crostini... More »

  • 2008 | Best Cheap Visit to the "Aquarium"

Responding to a question about what she could possibly do for fun on the cheap with her attention-span-deficient preschooler, a friend didn't hesitate: Uwajimaya. She expanded: "He loves looking at the fish." Wait...what Apparently four-year-olds don't much care how rare or common an orange tilapia is, they just like watching it swim around in a tank. So why pay the entry price for the Aquarium--which at $15 for adults ($10 for kids) will make you feel the need to spend the whole day... More »

  • 2007 | Best Free Aquarium

The live shellfish display at Uwajimaya sure beats shelling out $15 for admittance to the Seattle Aquarium. Razor and geoduck clams, Dungeness crab, lobster, shrimp, and multiple species of oysters swim in open-top tanks, along with colorful whole octopus, mackerel, and squid. There won't be a uniformed crew member at Uwajimaya to tell you that the yelloweye rockfish can reach 118 years old, but read the packaging in the freezer case across from the fishmongers, and you might learn that the... My family and grandchildren ride the bus tunnel down to this place that is in the International District. Before the mariner or Sounder games the food court is the best from noodles to the last place for a Dag's Burger and the products they have on sale occupy my very young grandchildren who never stop asking questions. My son and his wife always end up buying food stuff to take back to camas with them
