Urbano Café is a restaurant that resists classification. A veal Bolognese and risotto served with a number of entrees will have you thinking you’re in a quaint Italian BYOB, but then a pork belly special riddled with Asian flavors will keep you guessing. Split into two dining rooms in a shopping plaza that hosts Spiceman’s FM 1410 and Jimmy’s Food Store, Urbano Café makes good use of the greens that are grown just footsteps away. Don’t miss the meatballs resting on bed of parsnip puree with sautéed onions and a veal reduction, or the Hawaiian ceviche, which will make you wonder why salmon is served any other way. The cooking is creative and interesting here. You will not be bored. You should consider reservations, though. Urbano Café has impressed the neighborhood for years now and it's garnered a consistent and enthusiastic following.
If you plan ahead, BYOB restaurants can be a lot of fun. Not only can they save you a lot of green, but they also put an endless variety of booze at your disposal and the potential pairings are limitl... More »
While eating at Urbano Cafe, the subject of this week's review, I had a hard time figuring out the menu. A pasta Bolognese and other dishes point to Italian cooking, but an evening special touted pork... More »

The regular menu is always wonderful at this Old East Dallas nook, but it's the blackboard that really surprises and delights: mussels with white wine, garlic, basil, chorizo and marinara; tempura crab cakes with avocado/pepper salad and citrus vinaigrette; beef tenderloin with blue cheese and Parmesan polenta; poached egg and tomato Hollandaise. The owners and chef make sure you'll never come into their place and fail to find something new and wonderful to try. But call well ahead. This... More »
Though the neighborhood is still marginal--bars on windows--the restaurant is anything but. This nine-table, reservation-necessary, hot-house-in-summer Italian restaurant offers little in the traditional Little Italy sense. Rather, you can get intricately sauced and locally seasoned gourmet dishes such as the signature spaghetti Bolognese and delicate appetizers such as prosciutto-wrapped fig bruschetta with Texas honeycomb. Lunch is still a deal--the tasty paninis and... More »
