You won't find a sign advertising this popular South Grand institution. Nestled above Mekong on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Hartford Street, Upstairs is the go-to place for cheap drinks, dancing and local DJs spinning every night of the week. If sweating it out on the dance floor isn't your cup of tea, arrive early to snag a booth to people-watch; you won't be disappointed. If the scene upstairs gets stale, bounce down to uber-mod Barbarella, or the Blue Room, the two sister bars housed in the same building. The Upstairs draws a diverse crowd and is the unpretentious, South side alternative to the St. Louis club scene. There's generally a cover on the weekend, but if you're looking to party on the cheap, weeknights are your best bet.
Love to go here early in the eve and hang out in the dark and have a couple of drinks.
When it comes to dance clubs in St. Louis, nothing is as raw as the Upstairs Lounge. Holding the unofficial title as the city's premier place to get down for the past twenty years, the Upstairs Lounge has made a name for itself in both dancing and DJ debauchery. As base for several long-time residencies, the Upstairs Lounge dance floor is lit up weekly by an aural onslaught of drum 'n' bass, dubstep, electro, all-time greatest hits and hip hop. This south-city mainstay has the romance of a... More »
Some of us still like our dance clubs to whiff faintly of the underground. It's not that we want a dive or a lounge or, worse, a red-carpet casino circus ring. We don't want to be seen or to see anybody else who wants to be seen. It's not that we're snobs, we're just getting too old (or we're otherwise still too young) to pretend to be somebody we're not. We're smart. We want a dance floor that's smallish and littered at the end of the night with fliers promoting sessions such as "Love Hz"... More »
You may have spent your Saturday getting down to the latest jiggy beats or hard house, but that doesn't mean you're up for it when Monday has kicked your ass and Tuesday is staring you in the face. In keeping with your delicate state, the Upstairs Lounge gives one of the city's more unique and laid-back club nights, a cosmopolitan mix of indie rock, Britpop ('60s to present, natch) and trip-hop. It won't get you dancing, but in the dark, comfortable confines of the Upstairs, a little bit of... More »
It depends on what you want, of course. Velvet's the best of the big dumb clubs, replete with the requisite big dumb dance floor, the big dumb dress code and the fake crowd queues they create outside. Velvet brings great house DJs into town, though, and supports the area's better rave promoters by offering them nights at the club. But, hell, big dumb clubs are big dumb clubs, and that one little smart club on South Grand is where it's at when you want to dance. All local DJs all the time,... More »
Phaseone is the moniker of local hip-hop DJ and producer Andrew Jernigan, a south-city resident who glues together clanging drum machines, airy string synthesizers and sampled vocals. Hip-hop may be his home base, but in the past year or so,... More »
Not that the majority of people tossing back So Co limes in dance clubs care too much, but here's a fun fact: The drink, one of the breakout hits of last year, is kin to the universally known and admired "St. Louis cocktail," the best concoction... More »
At the Upstairs Lounge on South Grand, they make this drink called the Kublai Khan, a fact that sets the mind reeling in many directions simultaneously. Reeling because it's named after a Mongol emperor, grandson of Genghis; reeling because this... More »
