Description

A first-time trip to United Noodles in Seward can be overwhelming. Not only is it the largest Asian supermarket in the Twin Cities, it's the largest in the entire Midwest, and the sheer volume of products is astounding. United Noodles sells beans, grains, dressings, sauces, spices, and of course noodles, from all corners of the Asian continent and even parts of the Pacific Rim. Experienced cooks rely on United for harder-to-find items like dried seaweed (if you're making sushi, Coastal Seafoods is right around the corner), chicken feet, burdock, and Asian eggplants, but epicureans of every kind will appreciate the huge selection of frozen dumplings and dim sum buns. If shopping tends to make you hungry, plop down at UniDeli, the counter-service restaurant inside the market, and enjoy a steamy bowl of ramen, agedashi tofu, tea eggs, pork belly, and sticky-rice dumplings.

    Hunting for Easter candy

Like skydiving and politics, Easter candy is one of those things that people don't tend to feel wishy-washy about. There are those with rabid, hit-the-clearance-racks to-stock-up-for-next-year addictions, and those who would rather swallow an... More »

  • 2004 | BEST ASIAN GROCERY

It was the surf clams that caused us to fritter away damn near an entire afternoon in this vast, but hard to find, market. As confirmed Asian food lovers, we were predictably agog over United Noodles' bounty even before we spotted the pretty clams. We'd ogled the vacuum-sealed cuttlefish, scanned the wall-long array of pot stickers and frozen dim sum items, and contemplated the very nicely priced bags of genmaicha, green tea with roasted rice. Then, there it was, a one-pound box of frozen... More »

  • 2001 | BEST ASIAN GROCERY

United Noodles is the Asian grocery where you come for the vast selection, stay for the cleanliness and organization, and return for the reasonable prices and helpful, friendly service. It is the only place to go when you appreciate a Lunds-like environment and your shopping list includes durian and dried squid. Looking to learn about kimchi, pick up some fermented black beans, and score some jumbo shrimp for less than $8 a pound? Done, done, and done. Lazy folks with adventurous palates... More »

  • 2000 | BEST ASIAN GROCERY

Make your own maki? United Noodles sports ten varieties of nori. There are aisles of cookies, crackers, and canned goods, plus Asian seafood and produce you won't find anywhere else in town. The staff is pleasant and helpful--which comes in handy when you're in no shape to discern one kind of noodle from another, or to gauge which rice-paper wrappers are best suited to your first foray into spring-rolling, or even when you're idly wondering what one might do with a baby duck egg. While... More »
