Is there a more lovable symbol of America than Uncle Sam’s? Probably not. And it’s no surprise that the restaurant named for the iconic figure would serve some lovable American fare. Uncle Sam’s specializes in East Coast casual cuisine like pizza, cheesy grilled chicken and mushrooms, and Strombolis filled with ham, pepperoni, sausage, steak, and veggies. Among the extensive sandwich selection of grinders and hoagies is an incredible cheesesteak. The enormous Italian bread torpedo is brimming with juicy sliced meat, draped in gooey cheese, and a chock full of extras like pizza sauce, mushrooms, peppers, onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and hot or sweet peppers. The sandwiches are so big you can make a personal eating contest out of trying to finish one. The family-owned restaurant with locations in North Phoenix, Peoria, and Scottsdale also has finger-lickin’ good fried wings in Buffalo, BBQ (wussy), suicide, and honey hot. If you’re looking to score a deal, Uncle Sam’s also has a Bailout Plan menu with items like 7” cheese pizza, six wings, grilled chicken breast, and 1/4 cheesesteak for under $5.
No food scores with sports fans quite like wings. Whether hot, spicy, sweet, all wings, all drumsticks, or a little of each, we've listed ten of our favorite spots for wings in the Valley (plus a few ... More »
You know you found the place when you see the "cheesy" (pun intended) wooden statue of an "Uncle Sam" outside the establishment. A few years ago a friend of mine dragged me here. He was born and raised in Philadelphia and is a self-proclaimed expert in 'real' phillies. He LUVS this place...the owner has the buns/bread special made for him by a local baker using his own recipe. The steak is chopped and grilled on a huge flat iron in the kitchen and you can watch them do it. Depending on how you order yours, it can come as greasy and gooey with fatty meat and cheesy cheese as you want with all the onions and peppers dripping off that your heart/stomach desires. Wear an apron--or a shirt you expect to permanently stain.
We've got a little secret. We like mayonnaise on our cheesesteaks. It may seem like overkill, seeing as Uncle Sam's sandwiches are already the best on the planet, enormous torpedoes brimming with so much thinly sliced imported meat that we can't finish even half of one. These juicy beauties are draped in lots of gooey cheese, and our choice of extras: pizza sauce, mushrooms, peppers, onions, lettuce, tomato and hot or sweet peppers. Everything is plopped on a squishy Italian roll (white or... More »
We've been going to the original Uncle Sam's on Shea as long as we can remember, after it replaced a grimy Pizza Hut at least 15 years ago. After all this time, though, we have yet to find any other shop approaching the magnificence of these extraordinary cheesesteaks. The secret's in the meat, imported beef thinly sliced/chopped, tossed on the grill and heaped in insanely high portions on a soft Italian roll (wheat is available, but c'mon, white's the only way to go). There are 11 steaks... More »
The actual home of this Philly fave is the City of Brotherly Love. But here in the Valley, the local cheese steak fraternity pledges allegiance to Uncle Sam's.The red-white-and-blue sandwich shop never lets us down, no matter the time of day, no matter how busy. And it gets very, very busy as soon as the doors open, until every seat is gone and it's standing room only at the takeout counter. Fear not: The cooks are speed demons, slapping great mounds of thin-sliced steak on a sizzling... More »
