Udupi Palace, part of a small national chain, caters to South Indians with authentic food at bargain prices. Try the vadas, crisp-tender lentil doughnuts, or the paper dosa, a ginormous crepe filled with spiced potatoes and served with coconut chutney and a piping-hot lentil soup called sambar. The thali is a jewel box, offering a dozen small silver bowls filled with curries, soups, and pickles, all redolent with kari leaves, mustard seeds and chiles. Eat with your hands, as this is finger food, wet as it may be (it's all vegetarian to boot).
