With its lengthy list of dosas and uthappam, this south Indian restaurant is a go-to for those craving flavor and spice. Though it's a scattered chain restaurant (there are other locations in the Bay Area as well as Seattle, Toronto, and Los Angles), Udupi has a locals-only feel. Its fair prices and a cozy atmosphere have an increasing number of customers flocking to this Valencia Street location. There might be a wait - Udupi doesn't take reservations - but its huge portions and friendly service makes it worth it. Carnivores take note: The menu is vegetarian-only. But with crepelike dosas filled with spices, lentils, and vegetables, you won't miss the meat.

Everything on the menu is absolutely fabulous! You cannot go wrong on anything! The staff here are very friendly and the food is very authentic! I have to come here at least twice a week to get my South Indian fix! This is an all vegetarian restaurant and it's such a great place to bring a group of friends or a date! My bff Mo introduced this beautiful gem to me multiple years ago and I have been addicted ever since! Ask for Sanjay... he is my favorite member of the waitstaff! He always takes care of me! Tip: They only take cash
We've spent as much time in the Tandoorloin as anyone in town, and we still love the brawny, raw-boned Punjabi food that places like Shalimar and Lahore Karahi specialize in. But we're just as excited about the upswing in south Indian restaurants like Udupi Palace. The San Francisco branch of a national chain, Udupi Palace is cheaper and gutsier than its nearby rival, Dosa, and its crisp, papery masala dosa, rolled into a cylinder you could wrap around a newborn, never fails to amaze us. We... More »
