Veg-heads and Indian food lovers, unite! Udupi Cafe covers both of your needs, with a delicious, exotic South Indian smorgasbord that's nothing like your run-of-the-mill curry shop. Udupi offers such subcontinental delights as fried lentil doughnuts dipped in yogurt (dhai vada), enormous rice crepes filled with potatoes and onions (masala dosai), and steamed rice and lentil dumplings known as "iddly." Many items are prepared vegan, if you're of the "straight edge" clan. But most important, almost everything on the menu is delicious, which is why we'll be going back regularly.
Udupi Cafe is an all-vegetarian Southern Indian restaurant with something for everyone. I'd been hearing about Udupi for ages & never checked it out, as it's a little far from my house. I've never had a good reason to drive out there just to eat. I love Indian food, but as a vegan it's hard to find a variety of options, as so many Indian dishes contain cream or paneer cheese. (That is, besides the usual veggie curry, which can get boring after a while.) Udupi, on the other hand, has a *massive* selection of vegan options; so many, in fact, that the menu can be a little intimidating! On my first visit my boyfriend & I ordered 3 dishes and 2 different types of bread to share. The amount of food that came out was insane, and our table quickly filled up. (We were with 2 other people that also ordered a couple extra things to share & try out.) We literally had enough left-over food for about 3 additional meals each, and even re-heated the food tasted great. Everything we ordered was delicious- I can't recall the names of the dishes we tried, but I wouldn't hesitate to order anything off the menu. The staff were very friendly & welcoming- they were more than happy to assist in explaining dishes & were very patient with us (we took *ages* to decide what we wanted). The prices are also fantastic- we were really surprised at how little our bill was after ordering such an excess of food. If you're not close to Udupi, and you enjoy vegetarian and/or vegan Indian food, it really is worth the drive to get there. I can't wait to go back again & try some other dishes.
There's been no love lost between myself and those belonging to the Valley's veg-head clan. And I'm a big enough man -- literally as well as figuratively -- to admit that certain prejudiced perceptions of the vegan/vegetarian tribe have... More »
The scrumptious South Indian eats at Udupi Cafe prove once and for all that vegetarian/vegan food doesn't have to taste like plywood. After all, residents of the Indian subcontinent have been practicing Hindu-based vegetarianism for thousands of years, so you could say they're the past masters of making fleshless feasts tummy-worthy. The menu here is only about 80 percent vegan, to judge by the menu's identifying marks, but it's 100 percent vegetarian and delicious. This ain't the North... More »
