Following the lead of an earlier branch on St. Marks Place (and representing a Japanese-based franchise), Udon West specializes in plebian udon noodles-fat white farinaceous worms that slide down your throat with commendable ease. The basic bowl features noodles, a dishwater broth, and a choice of add-ins that runs from fried chicken, to shrimp tempura, to fried fish cake, to "mountain vegetable," whatever the hell that is. In addition, there are curries, teriyaki, and assorted don-buri, but the best deals on the menu are the meal combinations, which include a bowl of udon with another vernacular Japanese luncheon dish, with pickles thrown in. The katsudon-a pork cutlet with egg and onions over rice-is as good here as almost anywhere else in Midtown.
