Description

Get it hot, get it cheap and get it fast. In operation since 1946, 20th Street has never been anything more than a modest neighborhood diner, offering such working-class fare as eggs-and-bacon plates, cheeseburgers, tuna melts, green chile breakfast burritos, noodle bowls and chicken fried rice. Yes, you read that right: This modest, neighborhood breakfast bar has a history stretching back to the days when nearby Sakura Square was the center of Asian-American (or Asian with no American at all) culture in this city. Sixty years later, those noodle bowls and plates of fried rice are still selling. And the breakfast burrito (served all day, from open 'til close at 2 p.m.) is more or less an institution itself.

  • 2006 | BEST CHEAP BREAKFAST

No wi-fi, no cappuccino, no dress code and no service past 2:30 in the afternoon. That's what makes the 20th Street Cafe our favorite breakfast bar. But the prices -- which top out under the ten-dollar mark -- also make it the best place in Denver for breakfast on the cheap. The venerable cafe isn't fancy, and it doesn't have the most convenient parking in the world, but it does have a good chicken-fried steak, huge omelets, good diner-style coffee with fast refills and a menu that mixes up... • 2005 | Best Breakfast Bar

To qualify as a breakfast bar, a place must do one thing -- serve breakfast -- and do it within a limited time span. In the case of the 20th Street Cafe, that span runs from 6 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. weekdays (7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays), and never a minute longer. But if the owners want to knock off just as the late rush is coming to an end, who are we to complain At 20th Street has been dishing out working-class food for working-class people since 1946. The breakfasts are generous, the... More »

  • 2003 | Best Hole-in-the-Wall

There are three qualifications for a true hole-in-the-wall: It has to be tiny, locals-only, and do something so surprisingly well that it earns the lifelong loyalty of its regulars. The 20th Street Cafe hits the mark on all three. First, it's definitely small -- a dozen or so tables and a six-seat counter in a luncheonette-style storefront. Second, no tourists are going to stumble across it while looking for a Denny's, and if they do, odds are they'll just turn up their noses and keep on... More »

  • 2001 | Best Chicken-Fried Steak

The 20th Street Cafe bills itself as a "working man's cafe," but this increasingly upscale area doesn't have many working men these days -- not the sort the café was originally designed to serve, at any rate. But everyone from day laborers to high-paid attorneys can appreciate the down-home cooking served in this storefront, including a great chicken-fried steak, pounded to perfection, battered, fried golden and smothered in a soothing gravy for the ultimate comfort food. Teller's Taproom & Kitchen opens in the culinary wasteland that's Lakewood

    | Tue, March 13, 2012

After spending the weekend scrounging for food in Lakewood -- more accurately, Applewood -- I was ready to give up. I'd pushed away an inedible pizza, spit out sushi, sobbed over the limp and cold fri... More »

20th Street Cafe is no gastropub. Thank God.

    | Thu, May 14, 2009

20th Street Cafe is the polar opposite of a gastropub: It's a working-class diner serving the simplest and most historic of restaurant foods with nothing more than Cokes, coffees and mugs of green tea to drink. It's what restaurants were like befo... More »

    Home at the Range

    | Thu, September 05, 2002

All of you health nuts are going to feel pretty stupid someday, lying there in your hospital beds dying of nothing in particular. Redd Foxx said something like that once, and I agree with him. All you joggers, all you twig-and-berry vegans, all yo... More »
