Situated in the residential heart of the Coronado District, you won't readily stumble on low-key little Tuck Shop like you would some of the restaurants along Seventh Street, but this place is worth the detour. Owner DJ Fernandes, an architect, revamped the 1950s-era building into a relaxing hideaway that's one part sleek tapas bar and two parts cozy living room. Dig into shareable plates of Southern-influenced fare, like fried chicken, red beans and rice, and mac and cheese with prosciutto, and be sure to order a cocktail, housemade tonic water, ginger ale, and lemonade go perfectly with top-shelf spirits.
Ah, mac and cheese. Whether it comes from a blue box or your mother's oven, few childhood comforts can compare. These days, your cheesy noodle perfection can be customized with additions ranging from ... More »

DJ Fernandes has made his mark on Phoenix with eateries (Tuck Shop, Astor House, Vovomeena) known for lovely interiors and delicious food. Lucky for us, he's equally obsessed with coffee. From locally roasted ROCC beans to a unique Japanese Cold... More »
We're still surprised whenever we hear someone say they've never heard of Tuck Shop, one of the best casual-dining spots in town. Opened about three years ago, Tuck Shop (named after snack stands popular in the UK, where one "tucks in" for a quick bite) offers tapas-style dining with a delicious menu designed by restaurant consultant Mitch Hoverman. We love the mac and cheese with prosciutto and lobster, the skirt steak, and especially the citrus-brined chicken and white cheddar waffles.... More »
The historic Coronado District's restaurant row, stretching along Seventh Street between McDowell and Thomas, is full of great restaurants, but to get to one of our favorite spots in the area, you'll have to take a small detour. Nestled in the residential heart of the neighborhood, Tuck Shop does have an unlikely location (before its opening, some locals pitched a fit, and the city had to limit its business hours to dinner). Still, it's worth seeking out for its cozy mid-century atmosphere... More »
We're not sure whether it's the small-batch Scottish Hendrick's gin they use, which boasts "infusion of cucumber and rose petals," or the housemade tonic water, or that thin slice of cucumber garnishing this refreshing adult beverage, but the combo rocked our palate. Beware, once you've experienced this magical toddy, you might not settle for a G&T anywhere else, ever again. Don't say we didn't warn ya.Best of Phoenix 2009 In Photos More »
