There are a lot of buzzwords flying around in the food industry right now. Organic, locally sourced, seasonal, natural – do they mean something, or are they just a marketing ploy? At Tryst Café near North Phoenix’s Desert Ridge Marketplace, the selection of locally grown, hormone-free American fare is delicious enough to have any label it wants. Breakfast features Belgian waffles smothered in bananas foster, strawberry cheesecake, or candied walnuts, plus a few healthier options, like the Hawaiian breakfast plate with smoked kalua pork, cabbage, rice, and two eggs. Tryst Café also does a simple lunch justice with its roasted beet salad with hearty, sweet, and still “close to the earth” flavor pairing perfectly with goat cheese, arugula, and honey lime vinaigrette. The Roast Beast sandwich is just as tasty. You’ll need both hands to dip the stack of thinly sliced filet tips, pepper jack, and grilled red onions on ciabatta into the warm au jus.

Tryst Cafe is easily accessible as it’s right off of 101, but I’ll admit that it’s slightly hidden as it’s in a strip mall across from the Desert Ridge Shopping Center. Their goal is to serve tasty locally and organically sourced foods. In addition they have several vegan friendly options on their menu.
When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the upscale, yet relaxed atmosphere. With the ability to sit at the bar, sit inside at a table, or even outside, you have multiple options to choose from.
Per their website wine and beer tasting is available along with a daily happy hour. In addition, live in-house entertainment is provided on Monday nights. I could definitely see myself chilling out on a Monday night, eating some food and listening to relaxing music in an atmosphere found at Tryst.
Having conversed with Tryst Cafe on Twitter I knew exactly what my vegan options were and decided on the Hummus Trio, Desert Ridge Spring Rolls, and GTs Kombucha tea.
Each portion was beyond tasty. If you like hummus, you’ll love the trio option. As for the rolls, I’ve never had anything like it but REALLY like them. With the mango they had a slight sweetness but the dipping sauce provided a tiny kick that was complimenting to the rolls.
With prices ranging between $6.25-$10 for lunch I found it was affordable and worth the price for the portions we received.
Sweet potato tots for breakfast? We must be at Tryst Café. We love this place. Everything is reasonably priced, there are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options, and they offer organic mimosas and bloodies. We like the buttermilk flapjacks and Belgian waffles, and if it's a decadent kind of day, Tryst lets you smother them in bananas foster, strawberry cheesecake, or candied walnuts. The Hawaiian breakfast with smoked kalua pork is also a welcome twist on traditional breakfast.... More »
"You'd better eat your vegetables." How many times have you heard that in your life? Yeah, too many to count. We happen to love the green stuff, but we sure do know plenty of folks who aren't crazy about veggies. Of course, most of those people might change their minds after trying Tryst Cafe's beer-battered green beans. Even after a dip in the fryer, these babies (locally grown and organic, like most of Tryst's food) keep their snappy crispness and brilliant green color. The light beer... More »
