Description

Populated by a kooky coterie of performers and artists, the Trunk Space has become a haven for nationally touring indie outfits like Quintron and Miss Pussycat, as well as a number of burgeoning local bands. Creating a hipster block on Grand along with the always-popular Bikini Lounge and candy shop/record store Sweets & Beats, this quaint performance space/boutique/espresso bar is a stomping ground for a variety of musicians, artists, and other creative Phoenicians. Since its opening in 2005, a quirky cross-section of comedians, theater troupes, fringe acts, poets, and freakazoids have also graced the venue's tiny stage.

  • 2011 | Best Venue for Local Acts

It's all true: The Trunk Space doesn't have the best sound system in town, it gets way too hot, and plenty of times the crowd smells like it needs a collective introduction to the deodorant aisle at Fry's. So why is it the best venue for local musicians Simply because proprietors JRC and Steph Carrico sweat it out for local music, offering a place for local musicians to get started, hosting all-ages shows with an emphasis on spirit and community, and putting the experience of seeing... • 2010 | Best Gallery to See Artists Both Famous and Amateur Hanging Side by Side

A recent First Friday visit to this teeny Grand Avenue gallery/music space made for an exciting and rather shocking surprise: There, among the mail-art and tempura portraits by amateurs, were two giant pieces by renowned local artist Janet DeBerge Lange. Part of a series of metal quilts she's working on, each panel is made from tin boxes, old signage, and enamel-plated containers arranged in bright, whimsical designs. The pair displayed at The Trunk Space looked from a distance as though... More »

  • 2007 | BEST SWAP MEET

The Trunk Space's JRC and Steph are always up to something cool. And lately, they've found a new funky fashion stream of consciousness. Swap-o-Rama is a national thingy that pit-stops in Phoenix on Grand Ave. Just grab your crazy clothes and hand-me-downs that are meant for Goodwill or the Second Hand Rose in your family, and tramp on down to the Trunk Space the next time they host Swap-o-Rama. Throw your stuff into the pile of fabric, and mix and match your favorites until you find the... More »

  • 2007 | BEST PLACE TO CATCH LOCAL MUSIC SCENE NEWBIES

Your newest band just spent the past few weeks in mom and dad's garage rehearsing like crazy -- and making the folks equally so -- and now a location is needed to unleash your indie efforts upon the world (and we don't mean a street corner during First Fridays). Unfortunately, until you've got more of a refined sound and serious following, the Marquee is out of the question (or Modified Arts for that matter), so we recommend ringing up the Trunk Space, where owners JRC and Stephanie... • 2006 | BEST CUP OF COFFEE ON GRAND

There's something about JRC and Stephanie's little red espresso cart at the Trunk Space that's just so personal and accessible. It's like a car full of clowns, except the clowns are coffee, prepared with mad skills right in front of you. They also serve tea, snacks, fancy sodas, and even boba. Most things on the menu run $3 or less, and that's a conscious choice by your gracious hosts. Between sips, absorb a live performance, shop for art, apparel, books and gifts, and marvel further at how... More »

  • 2006 | BEST CLASSIC PHOTO BOOTH

JRC and Stephanie Carrico, co-owners of the Trunk Space, know they have a hot product when folks are making special trips to the exhibition space to score material for their MySpace profiles. The photo booth, converted from color to beautiful black-and-white, is one of a kind in the area, and pics snapped at the booth have been showing up on Internet blogs as well as Web sites for out-of-town bands swinging through the art gallery/performance venue. For just $3, the all-analog... More »

  • 2005 | BEST PLACE TO CATCH A FREAK SHOW

Stephanie Carrico and JRC's Grand Avenue art space/performance venue is sorta like Disneyland, only way smaller -- it's persistently packed with colorfully larger-than-life characters, there's tons of fun and fantasy to be had, and it could be "The Happiest Place on Earth," especially if you're a fan of entertainers (from both inside and outside the Valley) who are equally weird and wired. Carrico and JRC possess a self-proclaimed soft spot in their hearts for all manner of oddballs, and the... More »

"I'm not of the 'avant-garde über alles' mindset," guitarist Bill Horist says on the phone from Seattle, where he's lived and launched tours since 1995. "I like all kinds of music. People say they like all kinds of music, and sometimes they do, so... More »

Looking back, it's safe to say that the hyperbolic fervor surrounding the early 2000s' "rock revival" was embarrassingly misplaced. Jack White certainly built a black-and-red empire, but The Strokes have been battling skepticism for their past thr... More »
