Nestled in the elbow of one of Houston’s countless strip centers, Club Tropicana may not appear to be much from the exterior. The sign's blue and red glow can be easy to miss from the street, but for those seeking a dance club with Latin flair, Tropicana is a bright destination. Once inside, patrons will find a large dance floor, abundant seating, and an impressive bar in a room rich with red and mahogany decorations. Dancers twirl about three nights a week, sweeping in for the Tuesday salsa lessons and rolling to the DJs who spin hot rumba, bachata, and merengue tracks. Tropicana is only open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, though, so plan accordingly.

With the term "dance club," there are two ways to go. There's the myopic view, where the term strictly means the glitzy, glamorous, fabulous clubs (once known as "discotheques") that maybe aren't sp... More »

Salsa hot spots come and go, but Tropicana will always be there when you need to dance away the night. Inside an unassuming strip mall storefront on Fondren, you'll find a Casablanca-esque nightclub of dark reds and deep mahogany. The hardwood dance floor is spacious, and the salseros who wear it down are the city's best. Weekends are a blast at Tropicana, when you can groove to the bachata, meringue, salsa and chacha of live Latin bands. We love Tropicana for its mindblowingly diverse... More »
Hot DJs, an enthusiastic crowd and live music from top local and international Latin acts make Club Tropicana an easy choice for this year's Best Latin Club. (It won the title in 2003 and 2004.) The club is open only three nights a week (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday), so try not to miss the fun. Tuesday is Ladies' Night with music by Grupo Essencia; Friday features Orquesta Kandente and DJ Hollywood; and Saturday brings Orquesta Salmerum and DJ Lino. Past stars to take the Club Tropicana... Club Tropicana You can hear the salsa pumping from almost a block away. Inside, Club Tropicana is chock-full of attractive patrons. The salsa, merengue and bachata (the spicy music from the Dominican Republic) throb compliments of perennial local stars Mi Rumba. DJ Salserin, who's getting props around town for his mad salsa spinning, accents Mi Rumba's tunes on Fridays. It's almost painful to watch the short skirts and sculpted calves spinning on the dance floor. Need a dance crash course?... More »
At Club Tropicana, the tables may seem empty, but that doesn't mean you can sit down at them. Die-hard dancers get there early and claim their seats with napkin- covered cocktails. Of course, you probably won't even think about sitting once you get to shaking your ass on the dance floor. On typical weekends, Latin bands with lots of members play a nice mix of bachatas, merengues and salsas. Feel free to stare in amazement at the effortless twirls and fleet feet of the regular patrons. More »
