Description

Ever since 1949, long before I-95 connected South Florida and high-rises covered the coasts, Tropical Acres Steakhouse has sat on the outskirts of Fort Lauderdale, serving steaks, formality and a taste of the good life. More than six decades after opening, and after surviving two restaurant-gutting fires, the menu has grown but remains centered on steakhouse fare. Some items, like the 16-ounce bone-in ribeye are a delight and cooked precisely to order with a crusty sear. Others, such as the French onion soup, are weak renditions of the classics. Nonetheless, Tropical Acres excels at service and ambiance. A living room-style lobby puts you right at home while waiters and waitresses talk you through every step of meal. It's no surprise why people have been coming back for all these years.

Tropical Acres: A Steak House Time Machine

Gramps knows from class. Hell, he toughed it through the Depression, so don't tell him what is and isn't hip. Just ask and he'll tell you: shrimp cocktail surrounded by a parsley ring, a well-dressed gentleman playing the piano, and steak. No, wait: a really big steak. Those things are timeless, which is precisely why you need to dote on your... more established relatives, by taking them to Tropical Acres. Inside Acres, men still wear dinner jackets, seafood is often deep-fried, live music is never electrified, and the cocktail bar is Turner Classic Movie-grade. That's because Acres has been in Dania since 1949 (before it started calling itself Dania Beach), and staying classy is what's kept this place operating for nearly 60 years. Let those newfangled joints open with their fusion this and raw that; Tropical Acres will outlast them all. And it'll do it in a way that makes Gramps proud, with recession-proof prices and refinement.

  • 2001 | Best Neon Sign

If you're visiting Fort Lauderdale and you rent a car at the airport, chances are you'll drive by this sign, which is nestled amid the foliage along Federal Highway. The aqua and pink tubes of its classic roadside advertisement have flickered since 1949, beckoning would-be diners to the table. The sign would seem a good omen for visitors and locals alike, hearkening back to a simpler time when all a South Floridian really wanted was a tropical cocktail with a surf and turf. Some things...
